Obituary of Joseph Lee Harley

Joseph Lee Harley, Veteran of 2 Wars, Will Be Buried Here
Funeral services for Joseph Lee Harley, 54, will be Monday, at 2 p.m. at the McDonald Funeral Home. Rev. O. M. Bailey of Bremerton will officiate and the American Legion will have full military graveside services in Mount Angeles Cemetery.
A veteran of two world wars, Mr. Harley died Thursday evening in a Vancouver, Wash. hospital after a long illness.
Joseph Lee Harley was born in Ludington, Michigan, December 7, 1895, and came here with his parents in 1906. He attended schools in Port Angeles and graduated from Roosevelt high school with the first class in the present building in 1915.
He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1917. On May 26, 1918, he married Laura M. Morrison and shortly afterwards was assigned to duty in France.
After his discharge from the army, he returned here and resumed his duties in the postoffice, remaining in that service until 1942 when he again entered military service as a coast guardsman until discharged at the end of the war in 1945. He was employed by the veterans administration and held a position in that service until his health failed.
During his 45 years residence here, Mr. Harley was prominently identified with veterans and fraternal organizations and civic groups.
A member of Walter Ackley Post No. 29, American Legion, he was past post commander and past district commander of the American Legion. He was a past master of Port Angeles Lodge No. 69, F. and A.M.; member of the VFW; 33 years a member of Naval Lodge of Elks and a member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church.
Of the two sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Harley, one, Joseph Morrison Harley, lost his life in 1945 in Germany while a member of the U.S. armed forces.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Laura Harley; a son, David Harley; and two grandchildren, Joseph Harley III and Dianne Harley, all of Port Angeles; mother, Mrs. Julia Harley and sister, Mrs. Stella Rager, both of Winslow, Washington; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Coble, Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
